This Golden Green Bean Casserole is a delicious twist on the classic, bringing rich, golden flavors and a crispy finish to your Thanksgiving table!

Golden Green Bean Casserole in a white casserole dish with text.

Green bean casserole is a beloved holiday dish, but this Golden Green Bean Casserole takes it to the next level! It features a golden, crispy topping that perfectly complements the creamy, savory green beans beneath. Whether you’re hosting a small gathering or a big family feast, this recipe will have everyone reaching for seconds. It’s a fun twist on the classic green bean casserole side dish, too.

What makes this casserole so unique is its combination of textures and flavors. Instead of using traditional cream of mushroom soup, I use golden mushroom soup which gives off a unique less creamy flavor. It’s just the update your holiday table needs – traditional but with a fresh, flavorful twist.

Why this Recipe Works

Cheesy Green Bean Casserole on a dinner plate.

Easy to Put Together – With the convenience of frozen green beans and canned soup, this recipe saves time without sacrificing flavor. Perfect for busy holiday prep! You can even dice the onions a day ahead of time to make assembly even quicker!

Perfectly Balanced Texture and Flavor – The golden topping adds a delightful crunch, while the creamy sauce binds everything together beautifully.

Ideal for Any Holiday Table – With its homemade touch, this dish not only tastes amazing but also looks gorgeous – it’s bound to become a new family favorite.

Ingredients

Ingredients: cheddar, onion, butter, fried onions, green beans, and mushroom soup.

The best part about this recipe is that their are no canned green beans or even fresh green beans! You use frozen green beans. Making this a pretty easy recipe to make any time of the year as long as you keep the main ingredients in your freezer and pantry.

  • Green Beans – You will need frozen cut green beans for this recipe.
  • Butter – This is needed to saute the onions.
  • Onion – By sauteing the onion ahead of time it gives additional flavor and texture.
  • Mushroom Soup – Golden Mushroom Canned Soup
  • Cooking Spray – This is needed to prevent the casserole from sticking in your pan.
  • Cheddar Cheese – This is layered on top of the green beans before the crispy fried onions go on top.
  • Fried Onions – To achieve the perfect crunch you will want to pick up a container of the beloved holiday staple.

Directions

Four photos: Top left sauted onions in pot, top right green beans, bottom left; green beans pouring in dish, bottom right green beans in casserole dish.

Preheat oven to 375°F. Microwave the green beans in package on HIGH for 4–5 minutes or until hot. While the green beans cook saute the onions in butter over medium heat. Cook for about 5 minutes until they are golden in color.

Transfer the cooked green beans to a medium bowl. Stir in cooked onions and soup until blended.

Spray a 2-quart baking dish with cooking spray. Then, transfer the green bean mixture to the baking dish. Top the green beans evenly with cheese and French’s Fried Onions.

Bake for 10–15 minutes or until cheese melts and the onions are browned. Remove from the oven and serve immediately.

Tips & Tricks

Here are all my tips and tricks I’ve learned from making this cheesy green bean casserole recipe.

  • Use Frozen Green Beans for Convenience – No need to prep fresh beans! Frozen green beans work perfectly and save you time – just thaw and drain them before adding to the casserole for the best texture.
  • Golden Mushroom Soup is the Star Ingredient – This unique soup adds a rich, savory depth that makes the casserole stand out. It brings a bold mushroom flavor and a beautiful golden color to the dish.
  • Add Extra Seasoning if Needed – Since frozen green beans and canned soups can vary in saltiness, taste the mixture before baking and adjust salt and pepper to your preference.
  • Keep the Topping Crispy – To ensure a perfectly crunchy topping, sprinkle it on during the last 10–15 minutes of baking. This keeps it from getting soggy while still turning golden brown.
  • Make It Your Own – While the golden mushroom soup is the foundation, you can customize this dish by adding a bit of shredded cheese, a sprinkle of garlic powder, or even some red pepper flakes for a hint of spice.
  • Make Ahead – Make the casserole ahead of time and wait to add the French’s fried onions until you are ready to bake.

FAQs

Does Campbell’s still make golden mushroom soup?

I love this recipe because instead of using the traditional cream of mushroom soup mix you use a can of golden mushroom soup. This soup gives a completely different taste making this a fun twist. Campbell’s Condensed Golden Mushroom Soup is a flavorful combination of beef stock, tender mushrooms and savory tomato puree. Nothing creamy about this.

Best of all you can find this soup in just about any grocery store. You might have to look closely as this is not typically a soup that has rows and rows on the shelves.

Is Campbell’s Condensed Golden Mushroom Soup Gluten Free?

Wondering if this soup is gluten free? Unfortunately, it is not. It’s always best to read the label and do a little research if you have a gluten allergy.

Can I use fresh or frozen green beans?

Absolutely! My recipe calls for frozen, but you can use fresh green beans which will bring a nice texture to the dish and freshen up the casserole.

What other toppings can I use besides crispy onions?

Try panko breadcrumbs, crushed crackers, or even toasted almonds for extra texture and flavor.

How do I reheat leftovers without drying them out?

Reheat in the oven at 350°F, covering loosely with foil. This keeps moisture in while warming the dish evenly.

Can I make this recipe dairy-free?

Yes! Substitute dairy-free butter and milk alternatives like almond or oat milk for a delicious dairy-free version. I also have a dairy free green bean casserole if that makes life easier for you!
