Soft, sweet, fluffy are the best words to describe this ultra decadent Monkey Bread with Canned Biscuits recipe. The main ingredients for this under an hour recipe are refrigerated biscuits, sugar, butter, and cinnamon. These ingredients make for a surprisingly delectable sweet pull-apart bread.
This monkey bread with canned biscuits recipe brings back so many nostalgic memories for me. Every summer growing up, my family would visit the South Jersey shore. During our summer vacation we would rent bikes or a suri that 4 to 6 of us could ride together on around the boardwalk.
Our vacation wasn’t complete without visiting a store on the boardwalk called “Monkey Bread”. This was the first I had ever heard of this sweet amazingness “they” claimed to call “bread”. A sticky and sweet cinnamon sugar pull apart bread.
After our yearly visits my mom started making this as a special breakfast treat (maybe twice a year if we were lucky).

Anyone skill level of cook can make this recipe.
Store bought canned biscuits are the star of this recipe.

Ingredients
- Cooking Spray – this is a must for this recipe. Make sure you spray the fluted tube pan very well to ensure the bread will remove effortlessly.
- Granulated Sugar – You’ll create a cinnamon sugar mixture to toss the dough in.
- Ground Cinnamon – A good ground cinnamon will be perfect for the cinnamon sugar
- Nutmeg – I love to use a dash of this to add to the layer of flavors throughout the bread.
- Canned Biscuits – yes, you read that right. No need to make yeast biscuits from scratch. This is the perfect semi-homemade recipe. Even better to get kids involved in the kitchen!
- Salted Butter – this is needed to make the caramel like sauce.
- Brown Sugar – mixed into the butter
Directions
First, preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Lightly grease 12-cup fluted tube pan with cooking spray.
In a large bag, mix together the granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Set to the side.
Open packages of biscuits and cut each biscuit into quarters.
Toss the quarter biscuits in cinnamon sugar mixture.
In a sauce pan, mix together the butter and brown sugar.
Start placing the quarter pieces of biscuits around the fluted tub pan. Sprinkle some of the chopped pecans ⅓ of the way through. Continue to layer and added more pecans throughout today.
Pour the brown sugar sauce on top. Making sure to cover the entire top. Using a spoon, push the biscuits around to ensure the brown sugar butter seaps through the biscuits.
Bake for 45 minutes. Make sure you place a baking sheet under the pan in case it bubbles over.
Remove from the oven and let sit for 5 minutes.
Place a plate on top of the fluted pan and carefully flip monkey bread over. Serve immediately and enjoy.
FAQs
According to Wikipedia “The origin of the term “monkey bread” comes from the pastry being a finger food; the consumer would pick apart the bread as a monkey would.”
Yes, it’s an American style pastry that you pull apart to eat as a breakfast treat.
Traditionally it is made in a fluted pan. It resembles a circular donut shape. You can make it in a non-fluted pan, but you won’t get the same shape. Cooking time could also be less (never tested a non-fluted pan with this recipe).
To reheat the sweet bread you’ll want to wrap it in aluminum foil. This will help prevent it from getting hard. The steam trapped inside the aluminum foil will keep it soft. Bake at 350 degrees (covered) for 10-15 minutes until warmed through.
Tips & Tricks
Here are a few of my favorite tips and tricks whenever I make Monkey Bread with Biscuits.
- Pan – A large fluted tube pan is highly recommended for this recipe. The come in a lot of designs. The most familiar is a “bundt” pan.
- Measure Prior – Prior to baking, be sure the pan can hold 12 cups. If you are unsure you can pour measured cups of water into the pan to check the volume. This will ensure the dough can rise up without overflowing.
- Grease – Grease the inside of the fluted tube pan well. This will ensure the sticky bread will remove easily.

Thank you for this post! It brings back happy memories of making this with my mom as a kid. I wasn’t fond of nuts as a child, so we used to add raisins as well.
