How to Make Citrus Seasoning
This is a super easy salt to make from all the spices you currently have on hand in your cupboard. Simply, zest a lemon and add all the spices into a mixing bowl or directly into a jar.
How to Zest a Lemon
This recipe calls for a lemon to be zested. If you have never done this before, I am going to teach you exactly how to zest citrus. Zesting a lemon is simple.
You will need a microplane in order to zest the lime. I have had a few and I love the Kitchen IQ brand because it has a compartment under the zester that holds all the zest. Here is a similar zester/grater if you would like the same underneath attached compartment.
To zest, you simply rub a whole lemon on the surface of the grater until you reach the white portion of the lime. Then move the grater to another section of green and continue to grate the skin off.
The key is to keep the citrus whole as it is much easier to grate. If a recipe only calls for a small amount of zest you can freeze the lemon zest for future use as well as squeezing the juice from the lemon. I will mark a freezer container or Ziploc freezer bag with the quantity of lemons juiced and date the bag.
FAQS
This recipe makes 1 cup of Citrus Herb Seasoning Salt.
This citrus seasoning blend can replace salt in your recipe. I love to sprinkle some of the seasoning on my chicken, fish, shrimp, and scallops! I also love to add a tablespoon of the citrus seasoning blend to 2-3 tablespoons of olive oil to make a delicious bread dipping oil.
Lemon is a great substitute for salt, and can cut sodium as much as 75 percent without compromising the taste!
Yes, you can use fresh herbs instead of dried; however, the blend will only last 3-5 days max and will need to be stored inside the refrigerator. I would suggest using a food processor to minced the herbs very fine. The seasoning salt will be on the moister side since the fresh herbs will expel some liquid.
Two tablespoons lemon zest is about 2 medium-sized lemons.
Tips & Tricks
Here are my tips and tricks when making Citrus Seasoning.
- Yield – This recipe makes 1 cup.
- Storage – Store in a glass jar to prevent the seasoning scent from “staining” a plastic container.
- Use On – Use this seasoning on fish, chicken, potatoes, and vegetables!
- Salt – You can cut the amount of salt to make this more of a spice blend than a salt. Don’t go rubbing this salt blend all over chicken or fish–it will be uneatable due to the high amount of sodium in this mix.
- Hostess Gift – This also makes for a great host/hostess gift. Whip up a batch in a pretty jar that seals well and bring this the next time your invited to a BBQ. Your host/hostess will be wowed that you not only brought them something, but a customized spice blend made specifically for them.
