Instant Pot Homemade Green Bean Casserole is the perfect comforting side dish for any holiday party or even a Sunday dinner!

casserole dish with green beans, creamy sauce, and french fried onions with title text.

If you’re like me, you might have grown up on the canned green bean casserole recipe. Nothing wrong with that (heck, I still love that canned version). However, in my effort to modernize traditional comfort foods I’ve come up with the perfect Instant Pot Homemade Green Bean Casserole recipe. Fresh green beans and fresh mushrooms steam in the Instant Pot for just a few minutes and paired with a decadent cream sauce. This easy comforting recipe will make even the most devout green bean casserole lovers drooling over this homemade “fresh version”.

Why should I make Green Bean Casserole in the Instant Pot?

Whenever, I’m entertaining I find that my oven is packed to capacity. A large protein roasting in the oven like a turkey, roast beef, or ham. Followed by tons of side dishes. This method of cooking the green bean casserole in the Instant Pot now gives you more room in your oven. The only thing you need to account for is cooking the crispy fried onions for one minute. I still like to use the store bought version. There are homemade recipes, but in my mind nothing beats the store bought!

How do you make Instant Pot Homemade Green Bean Casserole?

First, you will place the fresh green beans, chopped mushrooms, and dehydrated onion flakes in the Instant Pot. I like to season with salt and black pepper. Then, I’ll mix well and add in a half cup of water. Seal the Instant Pot lid (making sure to turn the valve to “sealing”) and set the Instant Pot to “steam” for 2 minutes.

While the green beans cook, this is when I like to make a cornstarch slurry by mixing the cornstarch with the 2 tablespoons water. Set the slurry to the side, and mix in just before pouring.

At this time you also want to toast the crispy fried onions for 1 minute in the oven until golden in color (make sure they don’t burn). I place them under the broiler and watch them every single second until they are just golden.

Once the green beans are done cooking, this is when I carefully force the pressure out of the Instant Pot. Mix the green beans, then turn off the Instant Pot. Select “saute” mode, and make a well in the center of the Instant Pot. Begin stirring in the cornstarch slurry followed by the heavy cream. Stir in the small hole you made until you see it starts to thicken; then mix with the green beans. Remove from heat. Mix in ¼ of the crispy fried onions. Then top with the remaining.

Ingredients

  • 28 oz. fresh green beans trimmed
  • 8 oz. white mushrooms chopped
  • 2 tablespoons dehydrated onion flakes
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • ⅛ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ cup water
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 6 oz. container crispy fried onions
  • 1 cup heavy cream

Instructions

  • Place the green beans, chopped mushrooms, and onion flakes in the Instant Pot. Season with salt and black pepper, mix well then add in the ½ cup of water. Seal the lid, making sure to turn the valve to “sealing” and set the Instant Pot to “steam” for 2 minutes. (It will take 3-5 minutes to come to pressure.)
  • While the green beans cook, make a cornstarch slurry by mixing the cornstarch with the 2 tablespoons water. Set to the side, and mix just before pouring. At this time you will also want to toast the crispy fried onions for 1 minute in the oven until golden in color (make sure they don’t burn).
  • Once the green beans are done cooking, carefully force the pressure out of the Instant Pot. Mix the green beans, then turn off the Instant Pot and then select "saute" mode. Next, make a well in the center of the Instant Pot.
  • Begin stirring in the cornstarch slurry followed by the heavy cream. Stir in the small hole you made until you see it starts to thicken then mix with the green beans. Remove from heat. Mix in ¼ of the crispy fried onions. Then top with the remaining. Enjoy immediately.

Notes

I love having an Instant Pot – it lets me save space in the oven for roasting meat and doesn’t tie up the stovetop, either.
