There is nothing more comforting then a crispy on the outside soft on the inside baked potato. If I’m craving comfort food, it almost always has to do with potatoes. When I first started making recipes in my Air Fryer I started testing out baked potatoes in it.

For years, I made baked potatoes in the slow cooker and then I graduated to Instant Pot Baked Potatoes. It’s only natural that I tried them in the Air Fryer. I learned really quick how much I loved Air Fryer baked potatoes! They come out perfect every time, and I can’t wait to share with you how easy they are to make!

Why this Recipe Works

Baked potatoes in the Air Fryer is an easy side dish that can be made in a little over 30 minutes.

You can make extra potatoes to use for twice baked potatoes, potato skins, potato wedges or even breakfast potatoes the next day!

Serve the baked potato as a meal and stuff it with broccoli and cheese, pulled pork, or a taco potato!

Ingredients

four uncooked potatoes , a small bowl of salt, and a white oil spray can on top of a white marble counter.
  • Potatoes – Russet Idaho potatoes are the only potatoes I ever use for baked potatoes.
  • Oil – I like to use avocado oil as it has a neutral flavor and a high smoke point meaning your Air Fryer will not start producing smoke while the potatoes cook.
  • Salt – I love to sprinkle a little kosher salt after spraying the oil on the potato. This gives the potato a restaurant feel at home.

How to Cook Baked Potatoes in Air Fryer

3 potatoes on a white paper towel. the first potato has a fork in it.

First, preheat the air fryer at 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Wash and scrub the potatoes. Pat dry. Pierce the potatoes 2-3 times with the tines of a fork.

five whole potatoes with salt on top of a white marble counter.

Then spray both sides with avocado oil and sprinkle on salt.

five uncooked potatoes on a silver rack in a oven.

Air Fry for 30 minutes, flipping half way through. Once done let sit for 5 minutes. Split the middle of the cooked potatoes with the tines of a fork. Add toppings and enjoy.

Recipe FAQs

How long do I bake a potato in air fryer?

Depending on the size will depend on your baking time. For medium-sized Russet potatoes I find 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 30-35 minutes will have them cooked through in the Air Fryer.

Do you have to pierce a potato before baking in air fryer?

Ahh to pierce or not to pierce, that is the question! I always poke a few holes in my potatoes before cooking. This is an optional step and one that doesn’t really matter either way. I do feel that any moisture/steam can release in the potato.

Can you stack potatoes in an air fryer?

If you want a crispy outside for your potato do not stack the potatoes in the air fryer. Instead, make sure they are lined up in a single layer.

Do you have to coat your potato in oil before cooking in the Air Fryer?

If you want an extra crispy skin you will want to coat your russet potato with a neutral oil that also has a high smoke point so think oils like avocado, grapeseed, or even canola oil. This will ensure crispy skin.

Expert Tips & Tricks

A white plate with a baked potato sliced in the middle and filled with yellow cheese, green scallions, and sour cream. Next to the potato are five scallops.

Here are a few of the tips and tricks I’ve found useful when making baked potatoes in the Air Fryer.

  • Large Potatoes – Times may need to be adjusted if you are using jumbo baking potatoes. This recipe has been tested on smaller Idaho Russet potatoes.
  • Toppings – We love to put butter, sour cream, shredded cheese, chopped chives, and crispy bacon.
  • Salt – You can omit the salt if you don’t want the extra sodium. This is simply something that most restaurants do to add flavor to the skin.

Hi, Katie! This was exactly the simple baked potato recipe I was seeking. Thanks so much for posting!

I followed your instructions precisely and the potatoes came out of the air fryer with perfectly crispy, salted skins. I added one other step, which was to “slam” them on the counter after I took them out. The science of breaking up the starch seemed to be effective, as they were the fluffiest baked potato dinner I’ve made in a while.

Toppings included Kerrygold Irish butter, steamed broccoli & cauliflower, and low-fat cottage cheese for protein. We garnished with fresh-ground black pepper, parsley, and a tiny bit of shredded Colby jack cheese.

PS. I love your webpage font choice.

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review. I’ll have to try the counter slam method to break up the starches next time I make baked potatoes!
