Dairy-Free Dark Chocolate Brownies Recipe

Whether you are trying to avoid dairy due to desire or necessity my Dairy Free Brownies will have even the most dairy obsessed fooled. These rich decadent brownies are made from scratch in under an hour.

2 square bowls with slice of chocolate brownie and fresh strawberries in front of brownie pan.

We love brownies in my house. Whether it’s my Mini Egg Brownies, Peppermint Brownies, or simply fudge brownies. They are all a hit. Since having to limit my dairy intake I’ve had to re-imagine one of my favorite desserts. The brownie! My dairy-free brownies are soft, chewy and oh-so fudgey. One food I’ve missed the most while being dairy-free was brownies. These brownies are a take on my dairy-free chocolate mug cake. Just in a much larger batch so that everyone can share.

I actually made these for dessert for my out-of town family and they absolutely loved them. No one realized they were dairy free until I said something. They devoured the brownies—some going back up for seconds even thirds. Which was good for me—less calories to eat during the week. Let’s face it. If I have a dairy-free treat in my home I’ll eat it until it’s gone. I’ll “treat” myself to a dessert after lunch, a mid-afternoon snack and for dessert after dinner. I can’t help myself.

Why this Recipe Works

Delicious chewy decadent brownies that have been made dairy free.

Easy accessible ingredients you can find at just about any grocery store.

Even the dairy lovers will love these!

Ingredients

square bowl with slice of chocolate brownie and fresh strawberries.
  • Dry Ingredients – Sugar, all purpose flour, cocoa powder, and baking soda.
  • Oil – The secret ingredient to these brownies is Barleans Butter Flavored Coconut Oil.
  • Eggs – This recipe calls for 3 large eggs
  • Vanilla – A little pure vanilla extract is all you need.
  • Chocolate Chips – I use the Enjoy Life Dairy Free Mini Chocolate Chips.

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Melt the Barleans Butter Flavored Coconut Oil. Then place it in a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment. Add the granulated sugar and cocoa powder and cream for 30 seconds. Then add in the eggs, vanilla extract. Mix for an additional 30 seconds. Mix in the baking soda and all purpose flour  and mix until batter is mixed well and thick. Add in ¾ cup of the dairy free chocolate chi and mix for 5 seconds.
  • Grease a 9×9 glass baking dish with a little bit of the coconut oil. Then, pour in the batter into the dish. Using a flat spatula smooth out. Sprinkle the remaining ¼ cup of chocolate chips on top.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes or until brownies have set crispy on edges. Let the brownies rest for 30 minutes before slicing.

FAQS

Here are a few of my frequently asked questions when making dairy free brownies.

Are brownie mixes dairy free?

Some store bought brownie mixes are dairy free. You need to read the label to ensure it’s truly dairy free. Others, that are homemade might contain oil and real chocolate which is where you will need to modify and substitute.

How do you substitute coconut oil for butter?

You might wonder, how the heck did I make these brownies dairy free? My secret ingredient is Barleans Butter Flavored Coconut Oil. It’s the perfect 1:1 substitute for butter. I took my go-to dark chocolate brownie recipe that I’ve been making for years and gave it a try with Barleans Butter Flavored Coconut Oil. I’ll be honest—the taste of the brownies did not change in my opinion. Even better, the coconut oil cut additional calories and fat from the brownies.

Is Cocoa powder dairy free?

Yes, Cocoa powder is dairy free. To keep these dairy free I used cocoa powder instead of melting the chocolate chips to give it that dark chocolate flavor and keep the brownies dairy free.

What can use serve with brownies?

For those not dealing with a dairy allergy I served the fudge brownies with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a few fresh strawberries. Of course you can also serve it alongside dairy free ice cream.

Tips & Tricks

Here are a few of my favorite tips and tricks when making Dairy free brownies.

  • Storage – Store for up to 3 days in the refrigerator in an airtight container.
  • Dairy Free Ingredients – I have only tested this recipe with the exact dairy free ingredients listed in this recipe. Please note that flavors could vary depending on products used. Always check packaging to ensure it’s dairy free.
  • Baking Pans – You can use either a metal or glass baking pan. However, if you use a glass baking pan it is suggested to reduce the temperature so that the brownies bake at 325 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • How to check if brownies are done – Insert a toothpick inserted 2 inches from the side of the pan. The toothpick should come out almost clean. That is how you will know that the brownies are done.
